Summer is here — and so is swimming season!
As we head into the weekend and dive into fun, let's also dive into something just as important: WATER SAFETY for people living with epilepsy.
* For individuals with epilepsy, swimming can be enjoyed safely — but it requires planning and precautions. A seizure in or near water can be life-threatening, so here’s what you need to know:
* Never swim alone – Always have a dedicated buddy watching closely.
* Supervision means supervision – A friend nearby is not enough. They should be trained in seizure first aid and ready to respond.
* Life jackets are encouraged – Especially in open water like lakes or oceans.
* Avoid distractions – If you're the watcher, stay off your phone. Your attention could save a life.
* Choose safer waters – Shallow, calm, and lifeguard-monitored pools are best.
* Have a seizure action plan – Know the person's seizure triggers, patterns, and emergency steps.
Everyone deserves a summer filled with joy, independence, and safety. Let’s help make that a reality for the 1 in 26 living with epilepsy
Seize Your Moments
Life with epilepsy is made up of many moments — moments of challenge, moments of courage, and moments that can change everything. This is your reminder to seize them all.
That includes the moments when you're face-to-face with your doctor. Don’t let those appointments pass you by — come prepared, speak up, and make the most of them.
